Employee Onboarding Should Be As Great As Your Recruitment Workflow

By Erika Padua

Amy Hirsh Robinson, principal of the consulting firm The Interchange Group in Los Angeles, shared that “Onboarding is a magic moment when new employees decide to stay engaged or become disengaged. It offers an imprinting window when you can make an impression that stays with new employees for the duration of their careers”.

It has always been emphasized in the HR world how critical employee onboarding is. Onboarding is a great avenue to for employers to win the hearts of their future talents. In the same article that A.H. Robinson wrote in 2017 about the importance of good onboarding, “69 percent of employees are more likely to stay with a company for three years if they experience great onboarding”. This percentage, in my opinion, is quite big. Imagine, that’s more than half of the population of your new hires.

Think about it – if you do not put importance on the onboarding experience of your new hires, you might just quickly lose all your sourcing and recruiting efforts right before your eyes. Managing your candidates (post-hire) is just giving value to your people. It is as critical as your recruitment and sourcing initiatives – and this should not be given less value in any way.

“Recruitment should be continuous. It shouldn’t stop when your candidate accepts your offer.”

An article from nextgeneration.ie written by Luke Davis, stated that “The recruitment process is complex, the practice does not end at finding the perfect candidate for the role, recruitment should be ongoing, starting at sourcing the perfect candidate and ending when that perfect candidate is 100% embedded into the organization through effective onboarding programs”.

Pre-Onboarding and Technology

HR and recruitment trends are changing constantly. There are now limitless sourcing strategies and the candidate market is likewise adapting to the change. Recruitment continuously changes their game plan in terms of talent attraction.

Technology now plays a vital role in transforming your onboarding process while adapting the “old school” methods and changing it to a more versatile and engaging platform. Indeed, legacy systems have been rigid, compliance focused and were developed primarily to automate the process and allow people to complete forms electronically, according to Riges Younan, Avature’s VP – APAC.

The popularity of using different platforms in HR or recruitment is becoming more and more evident. Using technology in your candidate onboarding would soon be a favorite trend and practice. This direction would eliminate the manual distribution of your employment documents – wouldn’t that be a game-changer? Likewise, you will also be likely to reach the maximum positive candidate experience by automating how you engage to your newly hires. Contracts and paperwork? All might already be in embedded in your platform. To top it all up, going paperless will be a consideration.

Your induction all the way to getting your new hires be accustomed to your company values and vision can be incorporated to your future technology-driven solution. Technological platforms would help connect and engage with your talent even before they set foot in your office.

Onboarding has been known to increase employee retention, heighten engagement levels, and create brand ambassadors for the organization. This is how technology can help in the process. Onboarding is no longer about simple, face-to-face and post-hiring orientation. It has taken on a more flexible, personalized and interactive form, thanks to the myriad onboarding software solutions available in the market. Companies who wish to stand apart in the war for talent must check out this option of tech-enabled onboarding.
